WEEKEND COURSE IN COPENHAGEN WITH ELENA MIRONOV AND KARINA HØJGAARD

Do you want to be able to move more freely in your yoga practice (and of course, off the mat as well)? And even better, do you want to feel amazing in your own body as you move? Do you want to re-program your sitting and walking patterns and have a healthy posture?

Learning about fascia and how to use this knowledge for your advantage could be the key.

This weekend course will introduce you to one of the most important tissues in your body that is considered to be key to health and freedom of movement - fascia.

You will learn what it is, see how it moves, why it is so important and how to work with it in your own body or bodies of your students.

BUT FIRST OF ALL, WHAT IS FASCIA?

To put it simply, fascia keeps everything within the body in its right place. Fascia is a sheet of spiderweb-like fibrous connective tissue (mostly made of collagen), intertwined throughout the entire body. Fascia envelopes the body beneath the skin. It encloses muscles and groups of muscles, separating them into "pockets". In fact, fascia attaches, encloses, separates and stabilises not only muscles but also internal organs and other soft structures of the body. Fascia can contract, relax and move on its own.

Fascia keeps the actual muscle in place, but also allows the muscles move independently. Healthy fascia also provides lubrication so muscles can slide or move besides or along one another. The tissue can also be described as a fluid structure, and connects to bones as well.

When fascia is healthy, we feel mobile, open and aligned. When fascia health is compromised, for example it is dormant or inactive, it actually binds/"glues" together and significantly diminishes flexibility. We feel tight, uncomfortable, the range of muscle motion is limited and we may suffer from chronic pains.

WHAT IS FASCIA FLOW?

Fascia flow is a practice of yoga that introduces and emphasises lengthening of fascial lines throughout the body and targeted deep stretches to create more freedom of movement, improve the postural alignment and blood circulation and oxygenation of muscles and connective tissue. It may help relieve muscle soreness and release tight areas in the body. It may also alleviate pain and restore movement and function within the joints and soft tissue.

WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL RELEASE TECHNIQUE (MRT) AND SELF MYOFASCIAL RELEASE (SMR)?

The term myofascial is derived from two words: myo (muscle) and fascia (the connective tissue that separates and encloses the muscle).

Myofascia can become restricted due to overuse, trauma, inactivity, incorrect alignment and psychosomatic reasons. This can result in muscular pain and tension as well as diminished blood circulation.

MRT and SMR improve the mobility of skeletal muscles and reduce pain by helping the body relax contracted muscles, improving blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulating the stretch reflex in muscles. These techniques also help to keep the connective tissue and fascia hydrated, preventing premature ageing and tissue disfunction.

So, as you can see, there are lots of reasons to dive into this interesting topic together.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FASCIA FLOW AND RELEASE?

・it helps to release knots or restrictions in the fascia and muscle tissue surrounding it. This means that you'll feel better in your body and will be able to move more freely

・as the knots in the myofascia are released, muscle fibers are positioned in better alignment along the natural lines of the muscle fibers. This allows the gliding surface of the fascia to move freely and without limitations

・it reduces soreness and improves tissue recovery. This happens due to increased blood and lymph circulation. Improved blood circulation helps oxygen and other nutrients reach the muscles and other soft tissues. Improved lymph circulation allows for detoxification of the tissues to happen naturally

・trigger points become less sensitive, and pain is reduced. The techniques you'll learn not only help to reduce the muscular tensions around trigger points, but also release endorphins to help minimise pain

・muscles learn to relax. You'll be introduced to techniques that reduce and/or eliminate stored tension in the muscles (this may also help to alleviate muscular pains, aches and soreness)

・it improves range of motion of the joints

・it helps regulate regulate the production of chemicals called cytokines, which are important components in decreasing inflammation in the body
